Hydrogen Partners to Turn E-Waste into Greener Tomorrows

Why Sustainability Is Everyone’s Business
In a world powered by technology, the waste it leaves behind has become one of the planet’s fastest-growing challenges. At Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited, sustainability is not an afterthought. It is a core value that defines how we innovate, operate, and lead within the financial services industry.
Earlier this year, Hydrogen launched its flagship E-Waste Initiative in partnership with Umpaya, a leading environmental solutions provider, with strong support from the Rotary Club of Akowonjo District 9111.
The mission is simple yet powerful: to transform discarded technology into living symbols of renewal and responsibility, proving that digital innovation and environmental care can thrive side by side.
Turning Waste into Worth
The initiative began with a series of in-house sensitization sessions on the dangers of electronic waste. These sessions inspired Hydrogen staff to take active responsibility for their environment and rethink the afterlife of the devices they use daily.
Employees voluntarily donated end-of-life electronics such as laptops, phones, printers, and household gadgets. For every device collected, Umpaya pledged to plant a tree, establishing a unique “device-for-tree exchange” that converts digital waste into environmental growth.
“By turning discarded devices into living trees, we are demonstrating that innovation can be both digital and environmental,” said Obinna Ojekwe, Head of Marketing and Communications at Hydrogen.
“This is not a one-time effort. Hydrogen is committed to making e-waste management a continuous journey and inspiring the financial services industry to embrace responsibility for the planet.”
Through this partnership, e-waste disposal became more than just a sustainability drive. It became a shared movement, one that connects technology, people, and purpose.
Planting Hope, Growing Change
On October 3, 2025, Hydrogen, alongside its partners, led the planting of over 25 diverse trees at the Lagos Airport Hotel, including Palm, Coconut, and Tujar trees.
As these trees mature, they will absorb carbon dioxide, reduce greenhouse gases, and generate carbon credits. Their benefits will ripple through the environment, enriching biodiversity, improving air quality, and supporting local food security.
“Recycling electronics is about more than waste management,” said Ifeanyi Ochije, Co-founder of Umpaya.
“It is about creating value, protecting communities, and safeguarding our climate future. By linking e-waste recovery to tree planting, we are building a tangible connection between responsibility and impact.”
The event was more than symbolic, it was transformative. The team watched as seeds were placed in the soil, each representing a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable Nigeria.
Sowing Seeds for the Future
To ensure that this green effort flourishes, the Rotary Club District 9111 of Akowonjo extended its contribution by donating vital gardening tools and maintenance equipment.
The items donated included watering cans, knapsack sprayers, water hoses, manual garden sprayers, and garden sprinklers tools essential for nurturing the newly planted trees and ensuring they grow into strong, thriving assets for the community.
“These trees will not only stand as symbols of environmental stewardship but will also contribute to healthier ecosystems and better livelihoods for years to come,” said Mr. David Aimuihenyefe, President of the Rotary Club of Akowonjo.
This act of generosity represents the spirit of collaboration where corporate, civic, and environmental leaders work hand-in-hand to shape a cleaner future.
A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today
For Hydrogen and its partners, this initiative is more than corporate social responsibility. It is a declaration of intent.
The future of payments, technology, and business must be sustainable. Every recycled device and every planted tree represent deliberate steps toward reducing carbon emissions and nurturing a planet where innovation and ecology thrive together.
Hydrogen believes that progress is not defined solely by growth metrics but by the positive difference made along the way.
Because the true measure of progress is not how fast we grow, but how responsibly we do it.
